Rex Healthcare Congratulates Six Co-Workers Nominated as TBJ’s 2012 Health Care Heroes

 

Rex Healthcare is proud to recognize its six finalists for Triangle Business Journal's 2012 Health Care Heroes Awards. The finalists and winners were recognized at the publication's awards dinner on Thursday, March 22, at the Marriott City Center in downtown Raleigh. The Triangle Business Journal also posted Q&As with each person on its website.

Rex had more nominees among Triangle Business Journal's 25 finalists than any other health-care organization. Rex's finalists include:

  • Mary Anderson, executive director of the Prostate Cancer Coalition of NC and prostate cancer educator at Rex Cancer Center, a finalist in the Community Outreach category.
  • Jayne Byrd, R.N., M.S.N., associate vice president of Rex's Surgical Services, a finalist in the Health Care Manager category.
  • Ashley Honeycutt, R.D. , manager of Corporate and Community Services with Rex Wellness Centers / Wellness Services, a finalist in the Allied Health Professional category.
  • Helene Zehnder, R.N. , a clinical nurse manager for a cardiac unit, a finalist in the Nurse category.
  • Kenneth Zeitler, M.D. , Development Officer with Rex Healthcare Foundation, a finalist in the Lifetime Achievement category.
  • James Zidar, M.D. , cardiologist and President of Rex Heart & Vascular Specialists, a finalist in the Health Care Innovator/Researcher category.


*WINNER*
Mary Anderson
took over leadership of the Prostate Cancer Coalition of NC (PCCNC) from her father, who died from the disease. Through the nonprofit, she has become a tireless advocate for prostate cancer awareness, screening and education across the state. Mary has stuck with her father's vision that all men, regardless of race or socioeconomic background, deserve the right to be informed consumers in charge of their own health.


*FINALIST*
For more than 30 years, Jayne Byrd has helped shape the way patients receive surgical care at Rex, one of the busiest surgery centers in the southeast. She now oversees a team of more than 400 co-workers and 32 operating rooms that perform nearly 40,000 procedures a year. Jayne continues to push to improve patient care and safety at each of Rex's surgery centers in Wake County.

Ashley Honeycutt
oversees a wide range of programs at Rex related to wellness, exercise, nutrition and more. She organizes community and corporate programs that improve the lives of thousands of people every year. After an earlier career in the technology industry, Ashley discovered her true passion for health education and medical fitness.

Helene Zehnder
's expertise in patient satisfaction is well-known at Rex, but she's also recognized nationally as an industry leader. She helped Rex win the prestigious Nurse Magnet designation and serves on several national taskforces.

Dr. Kenneth Zeitler
, after spending decades caring for cancer patients, took on a new challenge raising money for the new N.C. Cancer Hospital at Rex. As a development officer at the Rex Healthcare Foundation, he is part of an effort that will improve thousands more lives for decades to come. Throughout the years, his dedication and compassion to providing top medical care have earned him the respect of physicians and patients.

Dr. James Zidar
is a world-renowned cardiovascular physician and researcher. His drive to find new innovations in treating arterial blockages that cause strokes have led to positive results for patients in this community and beyond. As president of Rex Heart & Vascular Specialists, he will continue to advance therapies that will improve the quality of life for the increasing number of cardiac patients.
