Oncology Clinical Trials
More people are surviving cancer than ever, due in large part to research gained through cancer clinical trials. With the collective help of doctors, researchers and cancer patients who choose to participate, cancer clinical trials are able to test the value of the latest research findings of the National Cancer Institute (NCI). Rex Cancer Center participates in ongoing cancer clinical trials in collaboration with the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. Taking years to complete from start to finish, these trials are required by law to include a protocol or action plan for each patient, as well as informed consent. In return, knowledge gained from these trials has led to increased survival for many cancers including Hodgkin’s disease, breast, uterine, testicular and bladder cancers; and certain leukemias.
Cancer knows no boundaries. It touches everyone, whether through personal diagnosis or knowledge of someone with cancer. The statistics are alarming, but the good news is that dramatic improvements have been made in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer as a direct result of invaluable research of cancer clinical trials. The trials open currently at Rex Cancer Center include the following:
Colon Cancer:
CALGB-SWOG-C80405: A Phase III Trial of Irinotecan/5-FU/Leucovorin or Oxaliplatin/5-FU/Leucovorin with Bevacizumab, or Cetuximab (C225), or with the Combination of Bevacizumab and Cetuximab for Patients with Untreated Metastatic Adenocarcinoma of the Colon or Rectum
Breast Cancer:
PACCT-1: Program for the Assessment of Clinical Cancer Tests (PACCT-1): Trial Assigning Indvidualized Options for Treatment: The TAILORx Trial
SWOG S0307:A Phase III Trial of Bisphosphonates as Adjuvant Therapy for Primary Breast Cancer
Lung Cancer:
LCCC 0512: Randomized Phase II Study of First-Line Treatment with Gemcitabine vs. Erlotinib vs. Gemcitabine and Erlotinib in Elderly Patients with Stage (IIIB/IV) Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer
Prostate Cancer:
LCCC 0420: Phase I/II Study on Concurrent Weekly Docetaxel (Taxotere), Androgen Ablation, and Adaptive External Beam Radiotherapy for Localized High-Risk Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate
Renal Cell Carcinoma (Kidney cancer):
ECOG 2805: ASSURE: Adjuvant Sorafenib or Sunitinib for Unfavorable Renal Cell Carcinoma
LCCC 0603: A Pilot Neoadjuvant Clinical Trial with Evaluation of Molecular Effects with Sorafenib for Patients with Stage II or Greater Renal Cell Carcinoma
Cancer clinical trials available today are early detection/screening trials, diagnostic trials, quality-of-life/supportive care trials, treatment trials and prevention trials.
