Rex Cancer Center is pleased to be associated with UNC Radiation Oncology Services physician practice. Together Rex and UNC Radiation Oncology Services offers cutting-edge, comprehensive cancer care at a single point of contact. The team, led by board-certified renowned physicians in the field of radiation oncology, uses the latest technologies and treatments to provide a broad scope of services and the highest quality of care to patients. With our physicians as members of the medical staff at UNC, Rex/UNC Radiation Oncology is proud to partner with and provide each patient the added convenience of not having to travel far from home for the same quality care found at the nationally-recognized N.C. Cancer Hospital and the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in Chapel Hill. Together, the dedicated staff of Rex Cancer Center and UNC Radiation Oncology Services cares for the whole patient - mind, body and spirit.

Meet our physicians

Dr. Anderson

Roger F. Anderson, Jr., M.D.

Dr. Anderson graduated from Duke University Medical School in 1981. He completed his internship in medicine at Duke University Medical Center in 1982 and completed his residency in radiation oncology in 1985 at Brigham and Women's Hospital/ Dana Farber Cancer Institute/ Children's Hospital-Harvard Medical School. He subsequently served on staff at Harvard Medical School until 1988. Dr. Anderson practiced at Rex with Triangle Radiation Oncology for nearly 18 years before moving to Charlotte, NC where he worked with the Southeast Radiation Oncology Group at Carolina's Medical Center and Presbyterian Hospital. Dr. Anderson is excited to be back in Raleigh and working with Rex/UNC Radiation Oncology.

Huffman, M.D.

Leroy George (Pete) Hoffman, Jr., M.D.

 

A native of Raleigh, Dr. Hoffman graduated from the Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1975. He completed his Pediatric Residency in 1978 and Radiation Oncology Residency in 1985 at North Carolina Baptist Hospital in Winston-Salem. Dr. Hoffman has served on the Board of American Cancer Society and the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. In addition, he was the former Medical Coordinator of the Rex Cancer Center.

Lee, M.D.

Catherine G. Lee, M.D.

Dr. Lee earned her medical degree from the University of South Florida College of Medicine in 1988. She completed a residency and fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center in the Department of Radiation Oncology in New York. After moving to North Carolina, Dr. Lee was a member of the faculty in the Department of Radiation Oncology At Duke University Medical Center and was Medical Director of the Department of Radiation Oncology at Duke Raleigh Hospital before joining the medical staff at Rex/UNC in 2006.

Dr. Bret Lewis

Brett E. Lewis, M.D., Ph.D.

 

Dr. Lewis received his Doctorate in Biochemistry and his Medical Doctorate from the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship at Beth Israel Medical Center. Dr. Lewis is a member of the American Society of Therapeutic Radiology Oncology (ASTRO), Evaluation Subcommittee of Emerging Technologies Committee of ASTRO, and the American Medical Society. Dr. Lewis's specializes in head and neck cancers, stereotactic brain and body radiosurgery and general radiation oncology. Before joining Rex in 2010, Dr. Lewis was Chief Resident at the Cancer Institute of New Jersey at Robert Wood Johnson University Department of Radiation Oncology.

Ornitz, M.D.

Robert D. Ornitz, M.D.

 

A native of New York, Dr. Ornitz completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Wisconsin, obtained his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma and completed his residency training at Duke University in 1975. Following a one-year post-doctoral fellowship, Dr. Ornitz was appointed the principle investigator of a project on neutron radiotherapy at the Nation Cancer Institute. In 1979 he returned to North Carolina to practice at Rex Healthcare and served as the president of Triangle Radiation Oncology Services, Inc and Director of the Radiation Oncology.

Scarantino, M.D.

Charles W. Scarantino, M.D., Ph.D.

A native of Pennsylvania, Dr. Scarantino received his Ph.D. from St. John’s University in New York and his medical degree from The Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina in 1973. Before coming to Raleigh, he was a member of the faculty at the University of Rochester, Bowman Gray and East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine in Greenville, North Carolina.

Dr. Justin J. Wu

Justin J. Wu, M.D.

Also a native of New York, Dr. Wu earned his undergraduate and medical school degrees from Duke University. Following a medical/pediatric internship at UNC Hospitals, he then completed his radiation oncology residency at Duke University Medical Center in 1996. After spending over 10 years in practice in Greensboro, Dr. Wu is very excited to be able to use his skills and expertise in caring for patients in the Triangle area.
