Rex Hospice Unit

It's never easy to discover that you or someone you love has a life-limiting illness. Rex Healthcare understands that, and our Inpatient Hospice Unit is designed to help terminally-ill patients and their families find comfort and support during life's final days. The hospital-based unit is staffed by specially trained physicians, nurses, therapists, social workers, counselors and volunteers.

The Inpatient Hospice Unit is different from other Rex Hospital units in that its goal is not to provide aggressive treatment to prolong life but to preserve the patient's quality of life and deliver the highest measure of comfort, dignity and respect in the patient's final days. Hospice care recognizes that dying is a part of life and focuses on maintaining the quality of remaining life in a comfortable home-like environment. To be admitted to the Inpatient Hospice Care Center, patients must meet the following criteria:

  • Patients must be enrolled in a Rex-contracted Hospice program at the time of admission.
  • Patients must have a life-limiting diagnosis.
  • Patients must consent to be admitted to the unit.
  • Patients admitted to the unit for acute care needs related to their Hospice diagnosis (not a residential program).
  • Patients do not need a "Do Not Resuscitate" order to be admitted to the inpatient Hospice Unit.

Family and friends providing comfort are allowed flexible visiting hours and limited overnight accommodations. Nurses, chaplains, counselors and volunteers help families understand and cope with feelings of grief that accompany the death of a loved one.
