Angel Fund of the Rex Healthcare Foundation

Overview

The Angel Fund is a program funded through community donations and enables us to assist patients with special financial needs as they cope with the hardships associated with cancer and treatment. The Angel Fund is available to any cancer patient treated at Rex Cancer Center.

The Angel Fund supports patients undergoing active treatment at Rex Cancer Center and is used for expenses associated with a patient's diagnosis and treatment. These may include transportation, nutrition supplements, prescriptions for pain and nausea management, and compression sleeves and bras for breast cancer survivors.

For more information, please contact any of the Rex Cancer Center's social workers or Karen Hansen, M.S.W. at (919) 570-7564 or Kimberly Fradel, M.S.W., L.C.S.W. at (919) 784-6863.

How the Angel Fund Works

Patient needs are assessed by medical social workers as part of the care plan at Rex. The assessment often uncovers financial needs impacting patient care leading to stress and possible early termination of treatment, which averages 6 to 20 months. Anyone who qualifies for Rex Assist will qualify for the Angel Fund. Medicaid eligibility, job loss and lack of insurance are also red flags. Additionally, patients who have insurance and stable income in the beginning may experience a financial decline and need assistance to complete their treatment. Social workers remain available to assess those challenges.

Social workers also help patients identify other sources of assistance in conjunction with the Angel Fund. These may include family, friends and community resources like food banks, Meals on Wheels, and the Caring Community Foundation. Patients are also directed to appropriate government programs.

A Clear Need

In 2011, the Angel Fund was accessed 2,000 times for 329 patients, approximately 30% of total patients treated at Rex Cancer Center. An average of $300 per patient meant significant contributions to their care: better compliance, reduced anxiety, and improved patient focus on healing and managing disease. Funding needs have steadily increased with greater numbers of patients being treated at Rex, additional social work support to assess needs, and impact of the current economic crisis.
