Ten routine health screenings that could save your life:

Carotid artery/stroke screening This non-invasive and painless ultrasound scan of the neck arteries uses high frequency sound waves to detect plaque buildup. Because decreased flow and the presence of plaque in arteries are linked to stroke, detection and the location of blocked arteries guides therapy to reduce the chance of stroke.

Cardiac ejection fraction/heart screening This ultrasound of the heart assesses left ventricular blood flow. A normal heart pumps out a little more than half the heart's volume of blood with each beat. Identifying decreased blood flow is key to helping prevent heart failure.

Cholesterol screening Because there is often a strong correlation between elevated levels of blood cholesterol and heart disease, cholesterol blood testing is a valuable screening tool. Best results are achieved when test is conducted after a 12-hour fast.

Blood glucose screening Blood glucose (or blood sugar) tests measure the amount of glucose (or sugar) in blood. People with high blood sugar levels may have diabetes because of the body's inability to use insulin properly. People with a low blood sugar level may have hypoglycemia. During a diabetes screening, a small blood sample taken via finger stick is analyzed to assess the blood's sugar content. Diabetes is a known risk factor of heart disease. Best results are achieved when test is conducted after a 12-hour fast.

Blood pressure screening Blood pressure screening measures the systolic and diastolic pressures. The higher one's blood pressure, the greater the risk of stroke, heart attack and heart failure.

Pulmonary function screening Pulmonary function tests measure how well the lungs take in and exhale air and how efficiently oxygen is transferred into the blood in an analysis of lung and airway function. The test is performed to diagnose certain types of lung disease (especially asthma, bronchitis and emphysema), to determine the cause of shortness of breath or to measure whether occupational exposure to contaminants affects lung function. It can also be used after the administration of medications to assess their effect and to measure progress in disease treatment.

Abdominal aortic aneurysm
screening
An abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA), a specific kind of aneurysm, is a condition in which the lining of the blood vessel called the aorta is enlarged within the abdomen. AAAs pose a threat because they are usually silent until a medical emergency occurs.

Sleep disorders consultation Sleep disorders consultation is an Epworth scale used to evaluate quality of rest. There is a known correlation between sleep disorders and stroke.

Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference tests measure whether your weight correlates with your height. People who are overweight or obese have been shown to have an increased likelihood of heart disease and other health problems.

Gastric reflux screening A brief interview with Rex Heartburn Center staff can determine a potential reflux problem. Gastric reflux is a backwash of stomach contents into the esophagus which inflames, erodes and ulcerates its inner lining. If reflux is left untreated for a prolonged period of time it can lead to Barrett's esophagus, a cellular change in the tissue lining of the esophagus. In turn, Barrett's esophagus increases the risk of lower esophageal cancer.
