CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System
CyberKnife® Robotic Radiosurgery System offers an advanced treatment option for tumors that may otherwise be inaccessible. It is available to Rex Cancer patients through Rex's partnership with the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and N.C. Cancer Hospital. Patients who need this treatment will receive it in Chapel Hill where the state's only CyberKnife system is located.
CyberKnife can reach tumors almost anywhere in the body with a concentrated, accurate beam of radiation so precise that it has a rate of sub-millimeter accuracy. Through computer-controlled guidance, CyberKnife detects even the slightest movement during treatment and automatically readjusts to deliver constant accuracy. Tumors that would otherwise be out of reach of radiation therapy or are inoperable can be treated in an outpatient setting with minimal recovery time. No anesthesia, breath holding or invasive body frames are necessary.
Your physician may suggest CyberKnife as part of your treatment plan. Typically, it is used to treat the following cancers:
- Arteriovenous malformations
- Trigeminal neuralgia
- Acoustic neuromas/schwannomas
- Pituitary/suprasellar tumors
- Glomus jugulare/tympanum tumors
- Head and neck
- Kidney and adrenal gland
