Cytology studies relate to the interpretation of cells that either exfoliate freely from the epithelial surfaces or are removed from various tissue sources by clinical procedures. Cervical Pap smears are a common example. Washing with saline, brushing with the help of fiber optic instruments, and needle aspiration of tissue are other examples of procedures utilized to obtain diagnostic cells. Both conventional Pap smears and liquid based Pap smears are interpreted within 7 working days. Immediate interpretations are provided for fine needle aspirations when clinically indicated. Qualified pathologists are available to perform fine needle aspirations of superficial structures such as skin lesions or lymph nodes.
