Nuclear Medicine

The Nuclear Medicine department at Rex Healthcare offers a wide range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures by using small amounts of radioactive materials or radiopharmaceuticals that are attracted to specific organs, bones or tissues.

Nuclear medicine involves special types of cameras called gamma or PET cameras, which detect gamma rays that are emitted from radiopharmaceuticals and form them into images of the specific area of the body being examined. While the nuclear procedure does give off a small amount of radiation, it is similar to that which is given off during a typical diagnostic X-ray.

We are currently the only department in Wake County that has received accreditation from the American College of Radiology.
