Rated Best for Heart Attack Survival
Rex is Wake County's only hospital to receive recognition
Rex Hospital is the only Wake County hospital that ranked above the national average for heart attack patient survival rates, according to Hospital Compare (www.hospitalcompare.hhs.gov). Rex's risk-adjusted 30-day mortality rates were 3 percent lower than the national average.
"For patients, it's reassuring to know a hospital in our community has achieved recognition as one of the best in treating heart attacks," said David Strong, president of Rex Healthcare. "We're proud of the dedicated physicians and co-workers responsible for this accolade."
Rex also scored above national averages on heart attack process-of-care measures - patients were given percutaneous coronary interventions, beta blockers, smoking cessation advice, pharmaceuticals for treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure, angiotensin receptor blockers and/or aspirin upon heart attack condition determination.
Hospital Compare is a Web site created by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and other members of the Hospital Quality Alliance to provide patients access to hospital evaluations to better inform care.
The results are based on a survey of Medicare information from hospitals across the country, and standardized patient evaluations. This information, gathered from July 1, 2005, to June 30, 2008, aims to objectively evaluate whether a hospital is preventing complications, educating patients about their conditions and providing an overall quality patient experience.
In January 2009, Rex was also recognized for quality cardiac care, receiving Wake County's first pulmonary rehabilitation program certification from the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR). ACVPR's certification ensures Rex's pulmonary rehabilitation program meets the essential national standards of cardiac and pulmonary care. For more information, click here.
In addition to providing quality cardiac care, Rex offers prevention information to patients and the public through HeartAware. HeartAware is an online heart health risk assessment, which provides cardiac awareness and information from the National Heart Organization. Qualifying participants may choose to enroll in a free, confidential, noninvasive screening program at Rex Hospital. For more information, click here.
