Komen Affiliate Awards Rex Healthcare Foundation $110,000 in Grants
Money to Help Pay for Women’s Mammograms, Surgeries for Breast Cancer Patients
RALEIGH, N.C. – Rex Healthcare Foundation is honored to receive two grants totaling $110,000 from the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate, to fund breast cancer screenings and treatments for underserved women.
The latest grants also mark a major milestone: Since 2007, the Rex Healthcare Foundation has received more than $500,000 from the local Komen affiliate. That money has helped provide free mammograms, other types of diagnostic imaging, and surgical services for thousands of women and breast cancer patients across the region on the Rex Mobile Mammography Unit and in the Rex Breast Care Center.
"We appreciate and depend on all the support Komen provides for our patients," said Amy Daniels, executive director of Rex Healthcare Foundation. "Breast cancer can strike any woman, and Rex's life-saving services and care help all women, regardless of their ability to pay for tests and treatment. Rex and Komen have a long history of supporting each other’s efforts to improve care and services in this region."
Komen officials, including local affiliate Executive Director Pam Kohl, recently presented two checks to Rex co-workers, including Daniels, Rex Chief Operating Officer Steve Burriss and Rex Healthcare Foundation Vice President Sylvia Hackett. One grant for $65,000 will be used to provide free mammograms to hundreds of uninsured and underinsured women. The other, for $45,000, will help pay for breast cancer surgical services such as consults, biopsies, lumpectomies, and mastectomies.
"Rex is an important partner in our efforts to diagnose and treat breast cancer among women across our region,” Kohl said. “We are pleased to support Rex in our shared mission of eliminating breast cancer as a life threatening disease."
Rex and UNC Health Care are long-time supporters of Komen Triangle Race for the Cure®. This year’s Race will be held on June 8 at Meredith College in Raleigh.
The Komen North Carolina Triangle to the Coast Affiliate serves 29 counties in central and eastern North Carolina; holding two annual Race for the Cure events in Raleigh and Wilmington. Seventy-five percent of the net proceeds generated by the Affiliate stay in the service area. In 2012, $1.1 million was distributed to 19 service agencies to provide a continuum of breast health services to underinsured and uninsured women in our service area. The remaining twenty-five percent funds national breast cancer research; the Affiliate contributed $400,000 in 2012. That same year, $2.4 was returned to the area in the form of research grants at Duke and the University of North Carolina. For more information, call 919-493-2873 or visit komennctc.org.
