Rex Healthcare is always in need of volunteers.

Whether you’re 14 years of age or over 90, Rex has more than 80 diverse volunteer positions making it easy to donate your time in a manner that suits both your interests and schedule.

Current Volunteer Opportunities

VolunTEEN Program

The Rex VolunTEEN Program gives teenagers the opportunity to contribute to the community while exploring a career in the health care industry. The program provides teenagers with practical experience and practice while developing good work habits.

High school sophomores, juniors and seniors ages 14-18 may apply. After school and summer programs are available.

VolunTEEN assignments are based on information provided by teens during the interview process and may include areas such as patient care units, day care, the recovery room, office support assignments and more. Teens whose parents work at Rex will be assigned to separate areas to avoid placing parents in a supervisory role.

General Requirements

  • Complete pre-volunteer drug screening
  • Complete health assessment to screen for Tuberculosis (TB), Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR).
  • Submission of two references from adults who are familiar with teen’s work ethic and character
  • Attend an all-day Rex staff orientation and obtain training in job-specific areas
  • While volunteering, teen must wear a uniform consisting of a green Rex polo, khaki pants and a Rex ID badge.
  • Teen must remain on hospital campus during work shifts, unless written permission has been provided by parents/guardians

After School VolunTEEN Program Requirements

  • Required to volunteer one day per week, Monday through Friday, from 3-5pm
  • Program spans for the entire academic school year (September-May)
  • Students must be at least 14 years of age by August 1st

2015-2016 After School Program (September 14, 2015 – May 20, 2016)

Rex is no longer accepting VolunTEEN applications for the 2015-2016 After School Program. Applications for the 2016- 2017 After School Program will be available May 2, 2016 until June 6, 2016.

Please note: Students must be 14 by August 1 and have completed their freshman year in high school to apply for this program.

Interviews for the 2015 – 2016 After School Program will be July 1, 2, 7, 8, 9, 2015.

VolunTEEN slots are limited. If the teen is scheduled for an interview, a parent or legal guardian is encouraged to accompany the teen to the interview. The interview lasts approximately 1 hour.

All VolunTEENS selected to participate in the program are required to attend an all-day Rex VolunTEEN orientation, health screening, and a drug screening.

Summer VolunTEEN Program Requirements

  • Required to volunteer one day per week, Monday through Friday, for a four-hour shift
  • Program spans for ten weeks over the course of the summer (June-August)
  • Students must be at least 14 years of age by May 1st

2015 Summer Program (June 15 - August 21)

Rex is no longer accepting VolunTEEN applications for the 2015 Summer Program. Applications for the 2016 Summer Program will be available Monday, January 11, 2016. Thank you for applying.

College Program

The Rex College and Graduate-Student Volunteer Program offers students hands-on experience while working in a professional health care environment. Placement areas may include, but are not limited to, patient care floors, culinary and nutrition services, pharmacy, physical therapy and same-day surgery.

Requirements:

  • Must be enrolled in a college undergraduate or graduate program on a full-time or part-time basis.
  • Volunteer at least one time per week for a four-hour shift. Most clinical volunteer opportunities are available Monday - Friday from 8 am - Noon or Noon - 4 pm. Clerical areas offer evening opportunities from 5 - 9 pm.
  • During fall and spring semester program, you must be willing to commit to two semesters (12 weeks each semester). During the summer program, you must be willing to volunteer for 10 weeks.
  • Complete orientation guidelines and be trained in your job-specific area.
  • Complete pre-volunteer drug screening.
  • Adhere to all Rex policies and procedures, including dress code.
  • Be responsible for finding substitutes when unavailable for assigned shift.
  • Complete health assessment to screen for Tuberculosis (TB), Pertussis (Whooping Cough), Varicella (Chicken Pox) and Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR).
  • Submission of two references from adults who are familiar with your work ethic and character.
Fall 2015 - Spring 2016 Program:

Rex is no longer accepting applications for the Fall 2015 - Spring 2016 college student program. The next opportunity to volunteer will be in the summer student program (May 16 – August 6), the online application will be available February 23, 2016. Adult Opportunities

Adult volunteer positions involve various levels of skill, challenge and involvement. Hours and days are flexible, however most positions require a two to four hour per week commitment.

  • Various Office, Receptionist and Data Entry positions

Requirements:

  • Adhere to all Rex policies and procedures, including dress code
  • Submission of two references from adults who are familiar with your work ethic and character

Animal-Assisted Therapies

The Rex Fur Friends program allows therapy dogs to visit patients for 5-10 minutes in the afternoon on Mondays-Fridays.

If you would like your dog to be a part of the Fur Friends program, your dog must:

  • Be 1 year of age or older
  • Be trained and certified in obedience by Therapy Dogs, Incorporated or Pet Partners (owners must also maintain membership with either of these agencies)
  • Pass the screening questionnaire to be completed by the owner and veterinarian
  • Provide proof from a veterinarian of current vaccinations, overall good physical health and a stable, tolerant temperament without signs of aggression toward people or other dogs
  • Be able to handle a reasonable amount of stress including loud noises, sudden movements and equipment (canes, walkers, etc.) used in the facility
  • Receive on-going preventive therapy for fleas and heartworms

Craft Supply Volunteers and Donations

Feeling crafty?

We are happy to accept the following items made by volunteers:

  • Knitted and crocheted caps for newborns (download the template)
  • Special bags and pillows for patients
  • Stuffed pillows for pediatric patients
  • Incubator Blankets - These will be used on top of incubators to keep light to a minimum. If knitted or crocheted, they cannot have holes penetrable by light. Should by 3'x3', or 3'x 4' and washable.
  • Lap Robes - Light and heavy robes are welcome. Can be any material. Should be 4'x5' and washable.
  • Drain bags
  • Angel bags for holding mementos

We are also happy to accept craft supply donations in the form of yarns and fabrics (at least one-yard in length) and magazines (less than six months old are preferred).

Rex Hospital Open

The annual Rex Hospital Open provides volunteers with the opportunity to support Rex while taking part in a professional golf tournament.

There are a number of volunteer opportunities available including: Walking Scorers, Marshals, Player Shuttle Services, Merchandise Sales, Hospitality Services, Pro-Am Services, and many more.
