Types of Stroke
Stroke is a type of cardiovascular disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Stroke can be thought of as a "brain attack." It occurs when any of the blood vessels that carry oxygen and nutrients to the brain are either blocked by a clot or burst. As a result, part of the brain cannot get the blood it needs, so it starts to die.
There are two types of stroke. They differ in the ways in which the flow of blood through a vessel to the brain is interrupted.
- Ischemic stroke - Occurs when a blood vessel is blocked by a clot.
- Hemorrhagic stroke - Occurs when a blood vessel bursts, causing bleeding in the brain.
