1in9 Donates $10,000 to Support Breast Cancer Patients at Rex Healthcare
Grant Money Provides Key Financial Assistance for Transportation, Other Expenses
RALEIGH, N.C. – 1in9, a local nonprofit dedicated to reducing financial burdens for breast cancer patients, has made an additional grant of $10,000 to Rex Healthcare in celebration of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The new grant follows an initial $20,000 that 1in9 presented Rex in December.
The funds support breast cancer patients at Rex by making sure they have the necessary resources to travel to and from doctor appointments, purchase nutritional supplements, and pay for out-of-pocket expenses. This crucial assistance helps patients continue with their recommended cancer treatments. The money is administered via the Rex Healthcare Foundation and has helped nearly 150 breast cancer patients so far. The 1in9 grant money works in a similar fashion to the Foundation’s Angel Fund, which has provided financial support to hundreds of Rex Cancer Center patients.
“We see that the grant is making a tremendous impact right here in our community and look forward to continuing our work with Rex,” said Stephanie Beguelin, a breast cancer survivor who founded 1in9 with her husband Eric two years ago. “Rex does such an incredible job taking care of its patients, and this partnership is helping us support local women. When you’re fighting breast cancer, the last thing you want to be worried about is how to get home and whether there will be food when you get there. We want to make their journey easier.”
The recent economic downturn and continuing changes to health insurance coverage have only increased the number of patients who are struggling financially, said Rose Auman, Support Services Coordinator with Rex Cancer Center. 1in9 receives new referrals every week, and its partnership with Rex will make it easier to get financial support directly to the people who need it.
“Cancer changes lives in major ways, regardless of your financial status,” Auman said. “We see people who may have insurance, but they’re not able to work. This money will provide critical assistance at a crucial time of their lives.”
1in9 is a Raleigh-based nonprofit that provides financial assistance for women undergoing breast cancer treatments at Triangle-area hospitals. It is the mission of 1in9 to make sure that no local woman discontinues her breast cancer treatment because of the financial impact it might have on her family. Founded by Stephanie Beguelin, 1in9 began helping individual patients at UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in March 2011. For more information or to make a donation, visit 1in9.com.
