RALEIGH, N.C. - Clinicians from Rex Heart & Vascular Center will provide free screenings to the Golden Oaks seniors on Saturday, May 19, in conjunction with the Raleigh Chapter of The Links, Incorporated and Raleigh Nursery School. The Golden Oaks program aims to enrich the lives of older adults in Wake County, while allowing them to live independently as long as possible. The event will be held Saturday, May 19, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Raleigh Nursery School, and clinicians plan to screen about 40 African-American women over the age of 65.

"Cardiovascular disease affects many in our community, but disproportionately among the African-American community," said Dee Darkes, Links volunteer and chief operating officer of Wake Heart & Vascular, a physician practice affiliated with Rex Healthcare and the UNC Health Care System. "We wanted to do our part to ensure these women were provided an opportunity to be properly screened."

Rex Heart & Vascular's 10-point screening program is a model effort that helps identify possible cardiovascular disease among members of the community. In addition to onsite results, clinicians also provide education and information about relevant cardiovascular-related topics such as obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and sleep apnea. Cardiologists participating in the screening day include Dr. Ravish Sachar with Wake Heart & Vascular and Duke University's Camille Frazier-Mills.

The Golden Oaks group was displaced by the recent closing of the YWCA and is now sponsored by the Raleigh Nursery School. The Links is a volunteer service organization of extraordinary women who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African-Americans and other persons of African ancestry.

Media Notes: General registration is closed, however members of the media are invited to attend. The event will be held at The Raleigh Nursery School, 1035 Halifax Street Raleigh, NC 27604.
