Pain Medications

Our staff in the Rex Women's Center will support your decision for pain relief during labor. Your nurse will assist you with breathing, relaxation and comfort measures. If you desire, your physician may prescribe an intravenous pain reliever to help take "the edge off" of your labor pains. Another option for pain relief is an epidural, which is prescribed by your obstetrician and given by either your physician or an anesthesiologist. Rex Women's Center has anesthesiologists available on-site 24 hours a day, so there's no waiting for pain relief.

Whatever you decide, each type of pain relief should be discussed with your obstetrician ahead of time so your nurses may assist you upon hospitalization and support you in your decision making during the different stages of labor.
