Rex Hospital Open Will Return to TPC at Wakefield Plantation May 25-31, 2015

John McConnell and Larry Robbins named as Chairmen of the PGA TOUR’s Event

RALEIGH, N.C. – Rex Healthcare, McConnell Golf and the PGA TOUR are pleased to announce that the Rex Hospital Open will return to TPC at Wakefield Plantation in Raleigh for three years, through the 2017 tournament. The 2015 tournament will take place May 25-31. The Rex Hospital Open is the Triangle’s premier golf event and offers a week of must-see professional golf as Tour members compete in the season-long race to secure 50 available PGA TOUR cards for the following season.

Rex charity golf has raised more than $9 million during the past 27 years. Money raised next year will go to the Rex Healthcare Foundation to support patient assistance programs at Rex Hospital, which are available to those in surrounding communities who need it the most.

Rex recently reached new, three-year agreements with the PGA TOUR to remain the title sponsor of the Rex Hospital Open, and with McConnell Golf to keep TPC at Wakefield Plantation as the event’s host site. TPC at Wakefield Plantation will host the tournament for the 15th straight year in 2015.

Rex also named two new co-chairmen for the 2015 Rex Hospital Open: John McConnell of McConnell Golf and Larry Robbins with Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton, LLP.

“We look forward to kicking off next summer with some great golf at a fantastic location and we’re pleased that John and Larry will lead our event in 2015,” said David Strong, president of Rex Healthcare. “The Rex Hospital Open is an important way we are able to raise much-needed financial support for our patients and their families.”

“Our partnerships with Rex Hospital and TPC at Wakefield Plantation continue to grow as does the tournament’s impact on the greater Raleigh community,” said Tour President Bill Calfee. “In the past three years, the Rex Hospital Open at TPC at Wakefield Plantation has produced exciting finishes and great champions who are now PGA TOUR members – James Hahn, Chesson Hadley and Byron Smith. We look forward to more of the same through 2017. We thank the Raleigh community for supporting the Rex Hospital Open all these years.”

McConnell is a passionate fan of the game of golf. He is president and owner of McConnell Golf, which now owns and operates nine premier private clubs in North and South Carolina, including TPC at Wakefield Plantation. McConnell Golf also manages the prestigious Grande Dunes Members Course and Ocean Club in Myrtle Beach for LStar Development. McConnell is also a denizen of the Triangle’s technology community. He co-founded Medic Computer Systems in the early 1980s and ran it for 16 years, before selling it to a British software giant. In 2006, John sold a second company, A4 Healthsystems, a Cary healthcare information management system, to Chicago-based Allscripts before founding McConnell Golf.

“It is my hope that we can take the tournament and Rex’s charity mission to a new level for the next three years,” McConnell said. “This tournament is such a great spectator event and the Triangle is fortunate to have professional golf playing here in late spring for family fun.”

Robbins is one of this region’s most respected lawyers and a partner with Wyrick Robbins Yates & Ponton LLP. Robbins’ practice focuses on the capital formation process and mergers and acquisitions. He serves as a trusted advisor to large and small companies as they navigate and evaluate their financial alternatives and as they design their corporate governance principles. In addition, Robbins is involved in the local community, serving as a board member for the North Carolina Technology Association and the Carolina Ballet, and as president of the North Carolina Museum of Art Foundation.

“The Rex Hospital Open provides much needed financial assistance to cover the cost of healthcare services and medications for underinsured and uninsured individuals here in the Research Triangle region,” Robbins said. “I have participated in the Rex Hospital Open for many years and it is truly humbling to raise resources for these worthy causes and the extraordinary commitment of the volunteers, sponsors and players to making our community a better place to live.”
