Rex to Offer One of North Carolina's First Fixed Sites to Register as a Bone Marrow Donor

Rex’s Partnership with Delete Blood Cancer Provides Convenient Location for Local Residents

RALEIGH, N.C. — Rex Blood Services is proud to announce it has partnered with Delete Blood Cancer to serve as the first dedicated site in North Carolina to provide easy and continuous access for people in the area to join the bone marrow donor registry. The partnership will allow blood donors at Rex to also become potential life-saving bone marrow donors through a quick, painless and convenient process.

"At Rex, nearly half of all blood transfusions used during cancer treatment are for blood cancer patients, so this cause is very near and dear to us," said Emilie Sanders Watson, donor services coordinator with Rex Blood Services. "Finding matches for patients is all about getting people on the bone marrow registry, and convenience is a big part of that. We want to make it as easy as possible for volunteers who want to help."

The registration process is fast and consists of filling out a short questionnaire and swabbing the inside of both cheeks. Registration is free, although Delete Blood Cancer accepts donations towards the cost of processing registrants’ swabs.

Initially, donors will be able to join the bone marrow registry at the main Rex Blood Services center, located at 2709 Blue Ridge Road, Raleigh. Eventually, donors will also be able to register at select off-site drives when the Rex Bloodmobile visits local employers, churches, community centers and elsewhere.

"Every donor we get is another chance of survival for another patient," said Bob Murray, a donor recruiter with Delete Blood Cancer. "A lot of people have heard about donating bone marrow and getting on the registry, but don’t know how to do it. Rex’s donor center will be an easy access point, one location where people can do it on a consistent basis."

About Delete Blood Cancer

Delete Blood Cancer DKMS was born from one individual's incredible efforts to find a suitable bone marrow donor to save his spouse's life. Our mission is to build the number of suitable bone marrow and stem cell donors, because we believe that no life should be lost due to an inability to find a donor match. Today, the organization is part of the world's largest bone marrow donor center. We have registered more than 4 million potential donors and facilitated more than 44,000 transplants around the world. But we're not stopping there. We lead the fight against blood cancer by working with families, communities and organizations to recruit donors and provide more patients with second chances at life.
