UNC REX’s Car-Seat Safety Program and Technician Recognized for Helping Protect Babies

REX Women’s Center in Raleigh offers free car-seat checks and installations every weekday morning

RALEIGH, N.C. – April 26, 2018 – UNC REX Healthcare’s Child Passenger Safety program, which helps thousands of new parents install and inspect infant car seats every year, has received two prestigious honors:

National Child Passenger Safety Technician of the Year
Carseat Safety Technician Chris MorrisChris Morris, the primary child passenger safety technician at UNC REX since 2003, was named National Child Passenger Safety Technician of the Year by the National Child Passenger Safety Board, at an annual Lifesavers Conference in San Antonio. After a long career in law enforcement, Morris joined UNC REX and has become one of the most visible faces at the hospital, spending many hours every week adjusting and inspecting car seats for new parents (and a few grandparents). There are more than 40,000 trained technicians in the United States.

2018 Non-Permanent Checking Station Program of the Year
UNC REX's Chris Morris and Robin Deal, RNThe North Carolina Child Passenger Safety Program named UNC REX as the 2018 Non-Permanent Checking Station Program of the Year at the North Carolina Traffic Safety Conference and Expo in Wilmington. Robin Deal, the Perinatal Services Manager who began the program at UNC REX nearly 20 years ago, accepted the award.

“We are incredibly proud of the car-seat safety program at REX Women’s Center, where we welcome more than 5,000 babies into the world every year,” said Steve Burriss, president of UNC REX. “We know that their efforts have saved lives and reassure many anxious parents before they drive home.”

The free car-seat assistance and installations are just one of the many services offered to expectant and new parents at REX Women’s Center, 4420 Lake Boone Trail in Raleigh. Inspection hours are 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. weekdays. Appointments aren’t necessary, but call (919) 784-1802 before your visit to make sure a technician is on duty.
