UNC Health Rex Earns Top Grades from Leapfrog Group

Recognition reflects UNC Health’s commitment to providing excellent care for all patients

Multiple hospitals affiliated with UNC Health have received top scores for patient safety and quality from the Leapfrog Group.

Leapfrog announced its Fall 2025 hospital safety report card today. These UNC Health hospitals earned top “A” grades:

  • UNC Hospitals, Chapel Hill
  • UNC Health Johnston, Clayton and Smithfield
  • UNC Health Lenoir, Kinston
  • UNC Health Nash, Rocky Mount
  • UNC Health Rex, Raleigh

“Earning a top grade from Leapfrog is a reflection of the commitment of our teammates and physicians to provide excellent care for our patients every day,” said Dr. Cristy Page, interim CEO of UNC Health. “We know patients and their families have choices about where to receive care, and we’re proud to be a destination for patients from across North Carolina and beyond.”

Twice a year, Leapfrog assigns an “A,” “B,” “C,” “D” or “F” grade to general hospitals across the country using evidence-based measures of patient safety focused exclusively on errors, accidents, injuries and infections.

“Earning an ‘A’ Grade means UNC Health made a true commitment to put patient safety first,” said Leah Binder, president and CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “We congratulate the leadership, Board, clinicians, staff and volunteers that all had a role to play in this achievement.”

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade stands as the only hospital ratings program focused solely on preventable medical errors, infections and injuries that kill more than 500 patients a day in the United States. This program is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public. Grades are updated twice annually, in the fall and spring.
