UNC Health Rex Honored as Top Quality Hospital by Vizient
Vizient study evaluates top-performing hospitals for safety and other factors
RALEIGH, N.C. – Sept. 22, 2025 – UNC Health Rex has been recognized as one of the country’s top hospitals for providing the highest quality patient care.
Vizient honored Rex with its Bernard A. Birnbaum Quality and Accountability Award, in the Large Specialized Complex Care Medical Center category.
Although Vizient isn’t a household name among most patients, the company helps hospitals across the country improve the quality of care they provide. Vizient’s Quality and Accountability Study evaluates performance improvement at more than 1,200 healthcare facilities. The study analyzes six areas of patient care: safety, mortality, effectiveness, efficiency, patient centeredness and variation in care.
This year, Vizient recognized about 120 hospitals as top performers nationwide, including five in North Carolina.
“This achievement is a direct reflection of our teammates’ expertise and commitment to delivering exceptional care to our patients and community,” said Dr. Meera Udayakumar, Rex’s chief medical officer.
Rex was also recently honored as a top, 5-star hospital by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. Only eight hospitals in North Carolina earned that distinction.
“We are proud to see Rex recognized, but even more proud of our team for their ongoing dedication to excellence,” said Chad Setliff, president of Rex.
The Vizient Quality and Accountability Study helps participating hospitals and health systems understand their performance against their peers. The study identifies structures and processes associated with high performance in quality and safety. The recognition period is for work spanning July 1, 2024 through June 30, 2025.
“We extend our sincere congratulations to this year’s top-performing hospitals recognized in the Vizient Quality and Accountability Study,” said David Levine, Vizient’s chief medical officer. “These organizations have demonstrated an exceptional commitment to delivering safe, effective, and patient-centered care. Their performance reflects the highest standards in clinical quality and operational excellence, and we are proud to honor their achievements.”
