We also offer support for you and your loved ones through a variety of classes and support opportunities.

Living with Diabetes

The REX Diabetes Education Center offers group classes in Raleigh, Cary and Wakefield. In Raleigh, patients can participate in a 6-week evening class series, and in Cary and Wakefield patients can join a 3-week daytime class series. Educators work with class participants to assess current self-management skills and medications as well as stress and exercise levels. Patients will have the opportunity to form a wonderful support network by being in a group setting, where they can benefit from positive encouragement from others.

Diabetes Support Group

UNC REX offers a diabetes support group the second Monday of each month at 5:30 at the NC Heart & Vascular Hospital. Our diabetes educators lead this group, and strive to offer interesting topics and guest speakers regarding diabetes and overall health. Family and friends are welcome!

Gestational Diabetes

During this exciting time in a woman's life, a diagnosis of gestational diabetes can be frightening. Gestational diabetes occurs when a pregnant woman who has never had diabetes before develops high blood sugar levels. Registered dietitians and registered nurses with REX Diabetes Education Center will help mothers-to-be manage diabetes during pregnancy. Determining a woman's individualized caloric needs, teaching monitoring skills, meal planning and other self-management training is most important so that both mom and baby remain healthy throughout pregnancy. Educators are also available to teach moms about insulin initiation.

Individual Counseling

Individual Counseling allows you to meet with a registered dietitian/diabetes educator to discuss your personal nutrition, exercise and overall health goals. In addition to diabetes management, our diabetes educators specialize in weight management, high cholesterol and high blood pressure.
