Rolled Baklava 

Rolled Baklava

Total time: approx. 1 hour

Ingredients

  • 1 package of phyllo dough (find near frozen pie crust)
  • 2 sticks of unsalted butter, melted
  • 2 cups of walnuts, chopped finely
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon of sugar

Syrup

  • 1.5 cups water
  • 1.5 cups sugar
  • 3 slices of orange
  • 2-3 pieces of cloves
  • 1 tablespoon of lemon juice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees and grease the baking sheet
  2. For the syrup:
    1. Place sugar, water, orange slices and cloves in a medium saucepan and bring to a boil

    2. Reduce the heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes

    3. Add lemon juice and simmer additional 5 additional minutes

    4. Remove syrup from heat and set aside

  3. For baklava:

    1. In another small bowl mix finely chopped walnut, cinnamon and 1 tablespoon of sugar and set aside

    2. Place one sheet of phyllo dough on the counter with the short side facing you.  Fold the sheet in half

    3. Spread 2/3 tablespoons of walnut mixture over the pastry

    4. Place a rolling pin in ½ inch diameter (oklava) over the edge and roll away to the end

    5. Gather the strips of dough on the rolling pin and gently squeeze from both ends towards the middle

    6. Pull out the rolling pin gently from the dough. You will end up with a tube made out of wrinkled dough

    7. Place the tube (rolled baklava) on greased baking sheet

    8. Continue making rolled baklava until the baking sheet is completely full

    9. In a small saucepan melt the butter

    10. Gently spoon hot butter on top of rolled baklava

    11. Bake 35-45 minutes until golden brown

    12. Remove rolled baklava from oven and let it cool for 10 minutes

    13. Gently pour cooled syrup over hot baklava. Let it cool and serve cold
