Pelvic Floor Therapy

(Raleigh, Wakefield and Holly Springs locations; UNC Rex Cancer Center; and UNC Rex Pelvic Health Therapy in Cary)

Pelvic problems can affect anyone and are relatively common. They include pelvic pain, incontinence (not being able to hold in urine), bowel dysfunction (problems with pooping), and bone and muscle issues that can happen with pregnancy. If you have pelvic health problems, pelvic floor therapy may improve your quality of life. Often, it can help you avoid or delay surgery.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment

You’ll meet with a specially trained physical therapist. Here’s what might happen:

  • Talking: Your therapist will talk to you about your symptoms and medical history.
  • Learning: You’ll learn more about your pelvic floor and how it works.
  • Checking: Your therapist may check your posture (the straightness of your back) and how your hips, back and belly move.
  • Examining: If you’re comfortable and agree, your therapist may check the muscles inside or outside your pelvis. You can say “no” to any part of the exam.
