Prenatal Fitness Classes
Learn how to strengthen your body as it goes through the changes of pregnancy. Explore the following pregnancy fitness classes at UNC REX Healthcare:
Take part in prenatal Hatha Yoga and learn breathing techniques, comfortable postures, and relaxation exercises. You’ll get the benefits of yoga, including increased flexibility and muscle strength. This helps you have a healthy pregnancy and prepares you for labor and delivery.
The six-week session costs $80. You’ll need a signed note from your doctor indicating you’re healthy enough for yoga. View specialty yoga classes to see when you can start participating.
Strengthen your body for the changes it will experience during pregnancy, delivery, and after labor. Prenatal Fit4Baby classes combine elements of strength training, cardio and stretching/balancing exercises. Enjoy safe and effective workouts no matter your fitness level. You can increase or decrease the intensity and impact of all exercises in the program. Learn from professionals at FIT4MOM Midtown Raleigh at the REX Women's Center. Register for Fit4Baby Classes. Classes are $75 per six-week session.
Giving birth is transformational! Giving birth can be intense physically and emotionally for the mother. You may wonder when and how you will return to your pre-pregnancy figure and strength.
Come join other moms in a six-week yoga class specifically tailored to regain muscle tone and strength in the pelvic and abdominal areas. We will also focus on the back body with proper alignment of the spine and hips to help alleviate back, shoulder, and neck strain.
Above all, learn how to practice self-care and relaxation so you can nurture and care for yourself and your baby. This class is suited for moms that are six-weeks postpartum until they are ready to return to a regular yoga practice. Classes are $80 per six-week session.
Learn how to care for yourself and your baby after your delivery. You can take advantage of postpartum classes, including:
Baby Care Basics
Learn the basics of caring for your baby in the first few months of life. You’ll learn more about how to bathe and feed your baby, normal newborn appearance, and sleeping strategies. This class is a part of Preparing for Childbirth (a birthing class) but is available as a standalone course. This class is $25 for each couple (you plus a support person).
Postpartum Care and Planning
Postpartum Planning introduces the extremely beneficial process of preparing for the postpartum period by learning about what to expect and evaluating and preparing to care for your own wellbeing along with your baby’s. We will also discuss in depth what postpartum mood disorders looks like in both women and men, and how, when and where to seek help.
Each family will be given a postpartum plan document intended to help prepare for and plan on care for your entire family once your baby arrives.
Moms Supporting Moms
Turn to Moms Supporting Moms for help adjusting to childbirth and new motherhood. You may experience postpartum depression—moderate to severe depression after birth caused by changes in hormone levels and stress.
Take part in weekly pregnancy support group meetings that are confidential and safe. You’ll benefit from an environment where moms share encouragement, hope, feelings, experiences, and support. Seek comfort from experienced counselors in postpartum depression who lead the sessions.
Big Brother & Big Sister Sibling Classes
Help your older children prepare for the changes ahead with the Big Brother/Big Sister Sibling class. These classes are for younger members of the family (age 3 to 13). In groups divided by age, children learn what to expect when a new sibling arrives and explore how to safely interact with a baby. This class includes a tour of the REX Women’s Center with a parent accompanying them. Cost is $5 to register.
Car Seat Safety Classes
Make sure you’re following the law when driving with your child. Learn from a two-hour class taught by a certified child passenger safety technician. This child passenger safety class will teach you how to correctly select, install, and use a child safety seat. Please feel free to bring your child safety seat to the class. For more information on car seat safety, view our car seat education [PDF]. This is a free class.
Car Seat Inspections
If you’ve already purchased and installed a car seat for your baby, you may choose to have your installation inspected. Our child passenger safety technicians are happy to inspect your car seat and assist you in making any necessary corrections.
Inspection hours are on Mondays through Fridays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Appointments are not necessary, but you can call 919-784-1802 before your visit to verify that a technician is on duty. Have your car seat installed and inspected at least two to three weeks before your expected delivery date.
We hope you never have to use CPR for a child or an infant, but it’s important to know what to do in case you need to. Rely on classes that teach you rescue skills in CPR, choking relief, and what to do in an emergency. You’ll also learn about ways to avoid sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the most common fatal injuries in infants and children. CPR for Family and Friends classes are $40.
