Basic Oven-Baked Marinated Tempeh

Basic Oven-Baked Marinated Tempeh

Ingredients

  • 2 tablespoons soy sauce
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons vinegar
  • 1 teaspoon hot sauce
  • 1 tempeh cake (8 ounces), cut to desired size

Directions

  1. Combine the soy sauce, vinegar, and hot sauce in a glass or plastic dish and stir to combine. If using additional seasoning (see below), add it here.
  2. Add the tempeh.
  3. Marinate for 20 minutes, storing in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
  4. Fifteen minutes before you are ready to cook the tempeh, preheat the oven to 375°F.
  5. Place the marinated tempeh pieces on a parchment lined baking sheet.
  6. Place each section ~1/4” distance between chunks.
  7. Bake for 25 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven and use as desired.

Optional seasoning tips for tempeh

  • 1 to 3 cloves garlic, pressed
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons peeled grated ginger
  • 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons honey
  • 1 teaspoon ground coriander
  • 1 to 2 teaspoons toasted sesame oil
  • 1/2 to 1 teaspoon Tabasco or other hot sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup or tomato paste

Note: if you find the tempeh to be too bitter, place tempeh patty in fry pan with 1” of water. Bring to a low boil over medium heat. Steam tempeh for a total of 10-12 minutes, flipping once at the halfway point. Then rinse, pat dry, and cool before cut into desired pieces.
