Low Sodium Sesame Crusted Glazed Tofu

Low Sodium Sesame Crusted Glazed Tofu

Modified from Chef Steve’s Recipe

Makes ~ 4 servings

Tofu Glaze Ingredients:

  • 4 Tbl Hoisin sauce
  • 3 Tbl honey or maple syrup
  • 2 Tbl low sodium soy sauce or homemade soy sauce
  • 2 Tbl Sherry wine (optional)
  • 1 Tbl sesame oil
  • 1 Tbl curry powder
  • 1 Tbl garlic, minced
  • 1 Tbl orange zest
  • 4 Tbl sesame seeds, toasted

Directions:

  1. Place everything in a small pot and bring to a boil. Reduce heat and simmer ~10 minutes. Set aside.

Tofu Ingredients:

  • 1 Block super firm tofu or pre-drained tofu
  • 2 Tbl low sodium or homemade soy sauce
  • 2 Tbl cornstarch or more if needed
  • 1-2 Tbl sesame oil
  • 1 Tbl olive or canola oil
  • Pepper as needed

Directions:

  1. Dice the tofu to yield roughly 50 pieces.

  2. Place the tofu in a mixing bowl and splash soy sauce over the tofu, then turn the tofu to coat in the soy sauce. Let sit for a few minutes, then turn again. Repeat a few times until the tofu absorbs most/all of the soy sauce.

  3. Sprinkle cornstarch over the tofu and turn with a spatula. Repeat a few times until the tofu has a thin layer of “crust”.

  4. Heat the oils in a sauté pan/skillet at 375°F and carefully add the tofu pieces into the oil. Add tofu pieces a few at a time, being sure to not crowd the pan.

  5. As the tofu “fries” and turns golden brown on the bottom, turn each piece using a fork to brown all sides of the tofu. Brown tofu in batches if needed.
  6. Once tofu is golden, spoon it into a bowl lined with paper towels, and season with salt and pepper. Repeat until all tofu is cooked. Serve with rice, cauliflower rice, vegetables of your choice!
