Clinical Pastoral Education
Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) is an interfaith and interreligious spiritual education designed for individuals who want to learn and practice effective skills as spiritual care respondents. As an accredited center of the Association of Clinical Pastoral Education, our CPE program at UNC Health Rex teaches students to hone spiritual care skills on various categories: Spiritual Formation and Integration, Awareness of Self and Others, Relational Dynamics, Spiritual Care Interventions, and Professional Development.
Meeting these ACPE Outcomes and Indicators will prepare future spiritual care respondents to be well-equipped and function within professional settings whether they are located in secular contexts or religious-based environments.

Additional Information
- Students seeking academic course credit for CPE should contact their seminary / divinity school registrar for information and guidance.
- Tuition is payable to UNC Health Rex. A limited number of partial tuition grants are available.
- Applications are reviewed as they are received with some consideration given to group composition. Interested students are encouraged to apply early.
- The date and time of the general hospital orientation will be communicated to students. The starting dates for each unit are connected to the general hospital orientation schedule. Therefore, the starting dates included here could vary.
- The Residency program consists of four (4) units of CPE over a two-year period with a seven-week break during the summer. Educational and clinical requirements for the program include a minimum of 24 hours per week plus an average of two overnight on-calls per month. The summer break is without compensation.
- For the part-time Residency, the hourly salary begins at $18.66. The actual rate is determined through the Human Resources hiring process. There is the possibility of an increase during the annual merit process. Information is subject to change. ACPE Educator Certification
Certification as an ACPE Educator by ACPE is an earned privilege and responsibility. It is achieved by meeting the requirements for certification in the ACPE Competencies. ACPE certified educators are clinical pastoral educators who are academically prepared and who are authorized by a recognized faith group. They combine perspectives from theology and the behavioral sciences in conducting accredited programs of clinically supervised ministry education.
ACPE only certifies ACPE Educators. We do not certify chaplains or pastoral counselors. CPE may be a prerequisite for certification as a chaplain or pastoral counselor. If you would like to enroll in a CPE unit, please reference our directory of Accredited Centers to find a location near you.
